Hi-Lo Memorial this Sunday

We are excited to contest the traditional Hi-Lo Memorial scotch doubles tournament this Sunday at Family Billiards.

This fun format creates doubles teams with the highest win percentage and the lowest win percentages on the season, the 2nd highest and 2nd lowest, and so on.

The Calcutta auction will help raise money for stipends to send SF players and referees to the West Coast Challenge in Burbank in August – not to mention give all competitors a chance to win some money!

Please click through to the event page for more information. Warmup begins at 11:30 am and signups close at noon.

Spring 2023 playoffs

Playoff time is here!

Brackets

Format & eligibility

  • Players with 25% participation are eligible to participate (14 or more games).
  • Unlike typical league nights, playoff matches will be played as a race to 9. Once a team reaches 9 wins, the match is over.
  • Also unlike typical league nights, only one time out is allowed per game, only the player at the table can call a time out, and the player at the table must designate a single teammate to participate in the time out.
  • If a match is tied 8-8 after 16 games, each captain chooses a player to compete in the tiebreaking game. Players in the 17th game lag for the break.
  • If the shot clock is in effect, players get one 60-second extension per game.

We ask captains to report scores promptly and accurately so we can schedule upcoming matches the next morning.

City Championship

The top 16 teams have qualified to compete for the City Championship. This is a double-elimination tournament with some losers bracket matches taking place on Thursday nights – please make sure to look closely at the schedule. The winning team will earn a trip to Los Angeles for West Coast Challenge 82.

Founders Cup

All other teams will play for the Founders Cup. This is a single-elimination tournament with a 3rd place consolation match.

More information

Bernie King tournament – new format

This season we are experimenting with a new format for the Bernie King memorial tournament, which raises money twice a year for the American Cancer Society.

Rather than have one bracket for players with a season winning percentage above .500 and another for players below .500, we will have a single bracket and use Fargo ratings to set up handicapped matches.

If the players are evenly matched, we will have the usual race to 3. However, for each 75-point difference, the lower-rated player will need to win one fewer game. For example, if Player A has a rating of 500 and Player B has a rating of 425, Player A will need 3 games to win while Player B will only need 2 games to win. If Player A competes against Player C with a rating of 350, Player C will only need to win 1 game to advance!

You can view your rating on the FargoRate iPhone/Android app or by clicking through to the Player List in the FargoRate League Management System.

We look forward to seeing you at Family Billiards. Full information can be found on the event page.

Bernie King tournament

Family Billiards will repeat as the venue for our next tournament, the Bernie King Memorial, on May 21. We are using a new handicapped format this year – please click through to the event page for more details.

Interdivisional scheduling

This season we have multiple rounds of interdivisional matches and an odd number of teams in two of the divisions, so don’t be surprised if an opponent doesn’t have the same within-division ranking. This is especially likely to happen if your team is near the top or bottom of your division. Our goal is to get competitive matchups while avoiding repeat matches and allowing players to visit a variety of different venues.
