Fall 2023 season is here!

Welcome to the Fall 2023 season of the San Francisco Pool Association! This season marks the 45th anniversary of the league’s founding in 1978. We are fortunate to inherit such a longstanding tradition of competition and sportsmanship.

Tournament schedules have been posted in the Handbook & Downloads section and will be populated into the event calendar over the next few days. For now we would like to highlight three events in particular:

The Captain’s Tournament will take place this Saturday, September 16th, at the Pilsner Inn. One player per team is allowed to compete.

The Luby Invitational will take place the following Saturday, September 23rd, at the Cinch Saloon. All new members and players with sub-.500 records the past two seasons are eligible and participation is free.

And starting September 30, qualifiers for the 9-Ball Tournament will begin. These will take place on Saturdays and Thursdays, with the 16 qualifying players vying for the trophy at Family Billiards on Sunday, October 29th.

Please click through to the specific event pages for more information. Good luck and happy shooting!

West Coast Challenge 82 results

After a fun weekend in Burbank, SFPA’s contingent to the West Coast Challenge returns to Northern California today with trophies from a number of wins and high placements. Congratulations to the entire SF delegation but especially the following:

  • Crystal Kelem earned her first women’s individual title, getting the monkey off her back after three previous runner-up finishes.
  • Tom Seymour and Jojo Abuda roared through the competition to take down the Hi-Lo title. Has Tom made a case for naming the tournament after him with a 7th career victory?
  • Strongly overperforming the expectations of a 6 seed, Will Shaheen finished 2nd overall in the open individuals tournament in his first West Coast Challenge appearance. Marcelo Aviles (7th) and Kevin DeWar (8th) also earned trophies for finishing in the top 8.
  • The Pilsner InnDecisives finished 3rd in their first WCC appearance as a team, winning their first tie-up against eventual runners-up Los Angeles before bowing out in close contests with Long Beach for the hot seat and then a rematch with LA in the losers bracket.
  • Mike Maxwell was runner-up in the hard fought, highly competitive Saturday night scotch doubles Calcutta, more than paying for his trip to LA. Danny Mullan, Kevin DeWar, Steven Waldon, JM Reasonda, Skinner Castagnola-Arteaga, and Skip Perry also had high finishes in the three night tournaments.

Full results and brackets can be found on our West Coast Challenge 82 page.

We look forward to doing it again next summer in San Diego!

Spring 2023 season in the books!

A series of congratulations are in order as we close out the Spring 2023 season and look forward to West Coast Challenge 82 in Burbank.

City Championship

The Pilsner InnDecisives roared back from the losers’ bracket to take down the title and the WCC bid. This is a historic season for the Pilsner Inn, one of the league’s staunchest supporters and sponsors, as it earns the City Championship team plaque for the first time. Congratulations are also in order to the Family Irish Brigade, Route 101 Nomads, and Happy Lounge Rawhides for appearances in the top 4.

Founders Cup

Gino e Carlo Uniti took down the single-elimination Founders Cup title, paying off their #1 seed. Longstanding team Rumors Never Die overperformed its #15 seed to earn the runner-up slot, followed by Cinch You’re Down There and Wrecking Balls.

WCC individual qualifiers

Across four qualifiers at Family Billiards and the Cinch, 30 players put their hats in the ring for spots in the West Coast Challenge. Guy Argo, Will Shaheen, Finn Macdonald, and Crystal Kelem emerged victorious, and they will be joined by eight other players as individual SFPA representatives at WCC 82. We will announce the final delegation at the season-ending awards party on August 15.

Awards party: August 15, Pilsner Inn, 6:00 pm

We look forward to seeing all league members at the end of season party and awards ceremony, which will feature dinner, awards, and a turkey shoot for free dues. Full details can be found here.
